Moving to the quarter-finals, they initially took the lead against Argentina with a goal by Kluivert in the 12th minute, but Claudio LĂłpez equalized for the Albiceleste. It was only in the 88th minute that they secured the victory with a superb goal by Bergkamp. In the semi-finals, they faced Brazil. The Brazilians took the lead with a goal by Ronaldo early in the second half, and Patrick Kluivert scored the equalizer. The match went to extra time but remained scoreless, leading to penalties where Cocu and Ronald de Boer missed crucial shots. In the third-place playoff, they were defeated by Croatia 2-1. Bergkamp finished as the second top scorer of the competition with five goals, just behind Davor Ć uker who scored six.
