In the 1998 World Cup, they were placed in Group E, where they topped Mexico, Belgium, and South Korea, although their only victory came against the Koreans, while they drew with the other two teams. In the Round of 16, they defeated Yugoslavia 2-1. Edgar Davids scored the second goal late in the game, after Yugoslavia's Predrag Mijatović missed a penalty shortly before. Moving to the quarter-finals, they initially took the lead against Argentina with a goal by Kluivert in the 12th minute, but Claudio López equalized for the Albiceleste. It was only in the 88th minute that they secured the victory with a superb goal by Bergkamp. In the semi-finals, they faced Brazil. The Brazilians took the lead with a goal by Ronaldo early in the second half, and Patrick Kluivert scored the equalizer. The match went to extra time but remained scoreless, leading to penalties where Cocu and Ronald de Boer missed crucial shots. In the third-place playoff, they were defeated by Croatia 2-1. Bergkamp finished as the second top scorer of the competition with five goals, just behind Davor Šuker who scored six.
