During the summer, Welsh head coach John Benjamin Toshack requested several changes, including the transfers of Bernd Schuster to AtlĂ©tico Madrid and defenders Oscar Ruggeri and MartĂn VĂĄzquez to Torino FC. After a failed attempt to acquire Liverpool's John Barnes, President Ramon Mendoza strengthened the team by signing Gheorghe Hagi, Predrag SpasiÄ (following Gheorghe Popescu's rejection), and Villaroya. Despite these moves, a losing streak dropped the team to 6th place, leading Mendoza to replace Toshack with club legend Alfredo Di StĂ©fano on November 25, 1990. Di StĂ©fano led the team to win the Supercopa de España against FC Barcelona, but league performance deteriorated with losses to Athletic Bilbao, Osasuna, AtlĂ©tico Madrid, and Barcelona. In February, forward Hugo SĂĄnchez suffered an injury, and the team was knocked out of the Copa del Rey by AtlĂ©tico Madrid in the round of 16. In March, Real Madrid was eliminated by Spartak Moscow in the European Cup quarter-finals, putting Di StĂ©fano's position in jeopardy. He resigned after the European exit, and RamĂłn Grosso served as interim manager for one game before Radomir AntiÄ was appointed as the new head coach. Under AntiÄ, despite SĂĄnchez being sidelined for the rest of the season, the team managed to secure 3rd place in the league, earning a spot in the 1991â92 UEFA Cup. Notable victories included wins against AtlĂ©tico Madrid and Barcelona in the final rounds of the season.
