In 1964, Denmark qualified for the European Championship alongside renowned countries Spain, the Soviet Union and Hungary. Denmark qualified through three play-off rounds, successively beating lacklustre countries Malta, Albania and Luxembourg. They needed a decider to beat Luxembourg, after a 2-2in Copenhagen and a 3-3in Luxembourg, they won 1-0 in the decider in Amsterdam. Remarkably, all six goals against the Luxembourgers were scored by one player: Ole Madsen. In the semi-finals, Denmark was hopeless against the Soviet Union (3-0). In the consolation final against Hungary, the team forced an extension against Hungary, where two goals by Dezső Novák eventually proved fatal to the team (3-1).
