In the 2004–05 season, SBV Excelsior competed in the Dutch Eerste Divisie under head coach John Metgod, finishing 12th in the league. The club had been relegated from the Eredivisie two years earlier and was in a rebuilding phase. Despite flashes of attacking promise, Excelsior lacked consistency and missed out on promotion playoffs. In the KNVB Cup, they reached the second round but were eliminated by Roda JC (3–0), after a first-round win over SV Triborgh (7–2). The standout performer was Brett Holman, an attacking midfielder who scored 13 goals in 33 league matches. He was supported by Santi Kolk (10 goals in 34 matches) and Mounir El Hamdaoui, who added 11 goals in just 14 appearances before moving to Willem II.
