One of Feyenoord's highlights came in the 1992/93 season when the club won its 13th national title, earning its first entry into the UEFA Champions League for the 1993/94 season. Under the leadership of club icon Willem van Hanegem, Feyenoord surprised everyone following a turbulent period. Key to this success was chairman Jorien van den Herik, who took over from Amandus Lundqvist in 1992. Van den Herik stabilized the board amid ongoing financial issues, which had been worsened by the bankruptcy of main sponsor HSC in 1992. The club's top scorer that season was the legendary Jozef Kiprich, who netted 24 goals. In the 1993–94 season Feyenoord, managed by Willem van Hanegem, finished second in the Eredivisie behind Ajax but celebrated success by winning the KNVB Cup with a 2–1 victory over NEC in De Kuip, while also reaching the Champions League round of 16 after eliminating ƍA Akranes before falling to Porto; the squad featured key figures such as Ed de Goey in goal, defensive leader John de Wolf, creative midfielders Peter Bosz and Rob Witschge, and attacking threats Gaston Taument, Regi Blinker, Henrik Larsson, and John van Loen, forming a balanced side that combined experience with emerging talent.
