Shortly after securing the cup in 1995, Willem van Hanegem departed as coach, following the earlier departure of technical director Wim Jansen. In the subsequent season, Geert Meijer and Arie Haan took turns as trainers, but these changes in leadership failed to yield any trophies. Even star player Ronald Koeman, who joined from FC Barcelona in 1995, couldn't replicate past successes. The squad underwent continuous changes, with players like Jean-Paul van Gastel, Kees van Wonderen, Bert Konterman, and Patrick Paauwe joining from the Dutch league. Additionally, foreign talents such as Jerzy Dudek, Bonaventure Kalou, Christian Gyan, Julio Ricardo Cruz, and Jon Dahl Tomasson were recruited.
