In 1998, Heerenveen made their debut in European competition by defeating FC Twente 3-1 in a playoff match in Zwolle. This match was unique in Dutch football history as it involved the two losing semi-finalists of the Dutch Cup, AFC Ajax and PSV, who had already qualified for the Champions League. In 2000, sc Heerenveen secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League by finishing second in the league. However, their attempt to qualify for the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto Cup in 2003 ended in disappointment as they were defeated 1-2 by Villarreal in Friesland and were unable to score in the goalless draw at El Madrigal.
