Between 1977 and 1981, Manchester City experienced a turbulent spell marked by early promise and a sharp decline. In 1977–78, under Tony Book, City finished 4th in the First Division, their second consecutive top‑four finish, with Brian Kidd (20 goals) leading the attack, supported by Mick Channon, Joe Royle, and midfielders like Asa Hartford and Gary Owen. Goalkeeper Joe Corrigan and defender Tommy Booth were ever‑present, giving the side stability. The following year (1978–79), results dipped and City slipped to 15th, despite Kidd again being top scorer and Dennis Tueart returning from the NASL. In 1979–80, Malcolm Allison returned as manager, but the team struggled badly, finishing 17th, with expensive signings such as Steve Daley failing to deliver. The decline continued in 1980–81, when City narrowly avoided relegation by finishing 12th, though they did reach the FA Cup final, losing to Tottenham after a replay, remembered for Ricky Villa’s famous goal.
