Stockport County’s 1992–93 season was one of near misses and heartbreak, as they reached Wembley twice but lost both finals. In the league, they finished 4th in the Second Division, qualifying for the play‑offs, but were beaten by Port Vale in the semi‑finals. In the Football League Trophy (Autoglass Trophy), County advanced past Chesterfield, Chester City, Hartlepool, Bradford City, Chesterfield again, and Wigan to reach the final, only to lose 2–1 to Port Vale at Wembley despite a goal from towering striker Kevin Francis. It was their third Wembley defeat in four years, following losses in the 1992 play‑off final and the 1992 Trophy final, but under manager Danny Bergara, Stockport had established themselves as a strong force in the third tier, with a direct, physical style and a loyal fanbase.
